Understanding the abuse of older LGBTQ+ people in domestic and institutional contexts

This one day in-person interactive workshop explores what is currently understood about abuse and older lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ+) people, what needs to be known, and what they key issues are that need to be addressed. The event addresses all aspects of abuse of older LGBTQ+ people, including: physical abuse; sexual abuse; psychological abuse; financial or material abuse; discriminatory abuse; organisational abuse; religious abuse; domestic violence; modern slavery; neglect; and acts of omission. We will be discussing research, policy and practice initiatives.

Speakers:

  • Gloria Gutman, Simon Fraser University, Canada: Research findings from Canadian Longitudinal Study on Ageing data on “elder abuse”, minority gender and sexual identities
  • Catherine Donovan, Durham University, UK: How to conceptualise (and so hear) LGBTQ+ people’s accounts of abuse?
  • Jen Marchbank, Simon Fraser University, Canada: The Indigo Project – voices of LGBTQ+ survivors of  “elder abuse”
  • Trish Hafford-Letchfield, University of Strathclyde, UK: Abuse of older LGBTQ+ people in health and social care contexts
  • Sue Westwood, University of York, UK: Religious abuse of older LGBTQ+ people by health and social care workers

There will be small group workshops in the afternoon.
